Artist Residency: Playa, Summerlake, Oregon
I was honored to be accepted into this short term residency in remote southern Oregon at Playa. The vast alkali lakebed of Summerlake lies within the Great Basin Desert, the largest desert in the US, encompassing parts of Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, California & Utah. It was a remarkable experience within a seemingly endless minimal landscape. Each day I hiked, observed, wrote & did drawings. To sum up what even 5 days in a wild, arid place can do was best said by Terry Tempest Williams in her book Red… “to jar their memories that beauty is found not in the excessive but in what is lean & spare & simple.”
